Mary Agnes was born in Undermillbeck, Bowness 1848, baptised at Windermere.

In the 1851 census she was living with her parents in Undermillbeck, father David was a waiter at the Royal Hotel. They had a servant in the house. In 1861 the family were living in the Royal Hotel and had twenty members of staff.

She married Frederick John Fittes in 1868 in Tyneside, they had at least six children: John Charles, Frederick Talbot, Frank, Herbert P, *Selby C and Hilda.

In 1871 the family lived in Byker, Frederick was a traveller for a Brewery. Her mother Alice was living with them.

In 1881 the family lived at Forest Lodge in Long Benton, Tyneside and had a servant. Mary died aged 36 in Tyneside in 1884.
It looks as though Frederick went on to re-marry, I haven't found a marriage record but his 'wife' was Mary A.

One of the Fittes children, Herbert Paul emigrated to Canada and fought in WWI. He is described as 5'5, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. His age on attestation was 38. He served with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. His occupation at the time was a butcher. He served in England and France and was a Trooper. He transferred to the Canadian Vetianary hospital and made it safely through the war.

*Selby C Fittes was an army deserter in the Boer War in 1899.

In the 1891 census the family were living in Ulverston Cumberland and Joseph was an in the iron ore mines.

In 1901 Joseph wasn't on the census but he hadn't died, Annie was living in Ulverston with all the children but was classed as unmarried. In the 1911 census Annie is classed as married but Joseph wasn't living there, the census was signed by William H T Armstrong the son. There were two boarders staying in the house, an estate agent and a photograher. All the children were at home and one of the daughters was married, Beatrice Alice. Annie wasn't working but all her children except Beatrice, were working, it would appear that Joseph had done a bunk and I couldn't find him on any census after 1891. Annie was still in Manchester in 1911.

I have a death record for Joseph, 20th May 1920 in Manchester.

Joseph was in South Africa in 1914 as was his son William Henry Talbot, another son David was in London, Joseph J T was at home living with his mother and sisters at 59 Mawsons Street Manchester.
