Lucy Ann Wass

Lucy Ann was born in Ripon on 5th December 1877. In 1881 she was living at 9 Dartons Yard Ripon with her mother who was an umbrella maker.

In 1891 she was in a Doncaster instutution for the deaf and dumb, Lucy became deaf at the age of 6. By 1901 she was back at home living with her mother and siblings at 15 Allhallowgate Ripon and her occupation was a charwoman. She had a daughter Lilian G Wass aged 3. Lucy Ann married George Sharp in Bradford in 1904, George was deaf and dumb.

In 1911 Lucy Ann was living at 13 Ramsden Court, Horton Bradford with husband George and her daughter Lilian who was named on the census as Lilian Wass Sharp. Lucy Ann was a laundress and George was a general labourer for the City Corporation, he was born in Wolverhampton Staffs.

Lucy Ann died in Bradford in 1928 aged 50.

Sabina was born in  Ripon on 21st November 1878, she was at home with her mother in 1881 aged 3. In 1891 Sabina was a 'boarder' at the Industrial home for girls in Bondgate Ripon. The school trained girls up for service and it was a harsh environment to live in but she survived the ordeal as did many others in her situation and by 1901 she was working as a servant for Elizabeth Binns who was widowed, at 16 Prospect Place, Harrogate.

Sabina married John Frederick Parker in Harrogate on 20th November 1903, John was born in London and moved there with Sabina,  In 1904 John was recorded as a gunner in the Royal House Artillery living at 44 North Road, Newcross Kent.

The couple had  four children, one child died. In 1911 Sabina was living at Brookhill Military quarters, Woolich, London and had her children with her, Lilian Gladys, Lucius Frederick, Leslie.

William was born in Ripon in 1880. he was a baby at home in 1881. In 1891 William was living in Jepson's Hospital in Water Skellgate Ripon, the home was founded in 1672 by Zacharias Jepson. (see stories). I haven't been able to find him in the 1901 census so he could have been away in the Boer War.

In 1903 William married Eliza Mary Eley in East Retford, they made their home in Hartlepool and had at least five children: William Robert, Henry, Lucy, James, Esther.

Eliza had been married to John Thomas Watt, they were married in July 1902, John died in April 1903. The couple lived in Hartlepool. Eliza and William went to East Retford to marry, not surprising as she would have only been widowed four months, William had family in Clarborough, his father Henry came from the area. Williams aunty Lucy (Wass) was a witness at the marriage.

In 1911 the family were living at 31 Bond St, Hartlepool and William was a labourer in the shipyard.

William served in WWI and in 1917 Eliza and their children were living back in Clarborough, probably because Hartlepool was being bombed, they moved back to Hartlepool in 1919 and lived at Darlington St.

William died in 1926 aged 46 in Hartlepool.

Eliza died in 1940 in Hartlepool.

Jane had to go to the local board to see if she could get any money to live, they took one look at her and told her she was too 'clean' to qualify. Instead of showing to be angry, she looked around the room and said, yes well give my money to Mrs ? as she needs it to buy her booze.
