Edwin Taylor and Alice Malsom were the parents of Alice Maria. Edwin was born in Kingswinford, Staffordshire in 1862, the son of John Taylor of Glasgow, and Mariah Baker of Kingswinford.

John was a colliery labourer in 1871, the family lived in Pensnett Staffordshire. In 1881 he was still living at the same address with his mother and siblings, his occupation being a general labourer.

Edwin married Alice Malsom on 15th June 1884 at St James Church, Lower Gornell, Sedgley, Staffordshire. It took me years to find Alice and it wasn't until I had the family bible after nanna died that it became clear why. I had the marriage certificate but she was recorded as Alice Nelson Jones (explanation later).

Edwin and Alice had seven children: The first three born in Staffordshire, the others in Parkgate. Alice Maria, 1885-1965, May 1885-1885, Hezekiah 1887-1960, Florence 1890-?, George Edwin 1891-?, Albert Edwin 1893-1894, Edwin 1894-1895

The family moved from Staffordshire to Parkgate, Rotherham between 1887 and 1890. In 1891 Edwin was a labourer, the address was Burtons Row.

Edwin died in a tragic accident at the ironworks where he worked. The accident occurred on 31st October and Edwin died on 3rd November 1894.

INQUEST
Mr Wightman held the Coroners inquest into the death of Edwin at Rotherham Hospital.
Edward Taylor (Edwin) aged 34, Cinder Wheeler of 23 Forge Row, Parkgate, who was burned while at work at the Parkgate Ironworks on the 31st October. Mr T.E. Dodgson, manager of the Parkgate Ironworks attended. The mother gave evidence of identification. She saw her son in the hospital and he told her it occurred due to him 'going giddy'. He had fallen on some hot cinders and sustained bad burns to his head, back and legs. He died on Monday. Thomas Fowler , labourer, deposed that it was Taylor's duty to fetch the hot slag from the furnace. Witness found him lying on the hot cinders and pulled him off, he was insensible. He was sent to the hospital in a cab. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

The parents of Edwin were John Taylor and Mariah Baker. John was born about 1819 in Glasgow Scotland, he was baptised on 3rd September 1819 in Glasgow

He married Mariah Humphries (nee Baker) in 1853 at St Thomas's church Dudley. Mariah was married prior to John and was on the 1851 census with her first husband Edward Humphries, I haven't found a death for him and can only speculate as to why she married again within a dozen or so months. Mariah had a son David Baker out of wedlock and also had two children with her first husband, John and Martha, she went on to have at least five further children with John: Elijah, Sarah, Mary A, Edwin, Joseph.

In 1861 John and his family were living in Bromley Lane, Kingswinford, Dudley. Johns occupation was a 'sinker'.

In 1871 the family were still in the same house and John was now a colliery labourer. In 1881 John was missing from the census, Mariah was in the same house with her children and recorded as married and was a 'sinkers' wife. The reason John wasn't on the census is because he died in 1878! Instead of recording Mariah as widowed she was recorded as married.

In 1891 Mariah was widowed and living at Burtons Row, Parkgate, Rawmarsh, Rotherham.

The parents of John were William Taylor and Bethia Tennent. William was born about 1785 in Scotland. William and Bethia were married in July 1809 in New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland.

I haven't got any further with the Taylor family and still searching for records.

Family of Alice Malsom.

Alice was born in 1865 in Mitcheldean in Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean. Baptism 1st March. Daughter of Richard Malsom and Caroline Trigg. Alice's father died when she was only two.

In 1881 Alice was a servant in Kingswinford, Staffordshire, probably where she met Edwin Taylor her future husband.

Caroline her mother re-married to 1. John Jones, 2. William Hancock. Alice married Married Edwin Taylor but on her marriage cert, she was named Alice Nelson Jones, obviously a mistake, her father was recorded as Richard Jones which is incorrect, he was Richard Malsom and her step father was John Jones. This only came to light after reading the entries in the family bible in 2013.

Alice went on to marry Godfrey Thickett in 1895 and they had five children between them.: Elizabeth, Thomas, Walter, Arthur, Caroline. One child died in infancy.

Richard passed away in 1867 from gastric fever 24 days, phlegmonous erysepalas 10 days. Burial 23rd October 1867.
