Whittingham Families

Margaret Whittingham

was born in 1871 in Skipton Yorkshire daughter of James Whittingham and Ellen Ann Clapham.

In 1881 the family was living in Skipton at 'The baths'.

In 1891 Margaret was living as a lodger with a family named Ideson in Otley Street Skipton, she was a cotton factory hand aged 19. It was in the same year that she gave birth to Samuel Walker Whittingham as a single woman. 

Margaret married Thomas Henry Walker in 1897 after having another child  probaby both boys were Thomas's as they both had Walker as a middle name.  The couple went on to have a further eight children.

In 1901 the family were living at 12 Union Terrace Skipton and Thomas was a warp dresser. 

In 1911 the family were still at 12 Union Terrace,

James Whittingham

 was born in Draughton on 24th July 1810. He was Christened at Bolton Abbey on 9th September 1810, mother was Ann Whittingham and father Henry Pickup.

He doesn't appear on any of the 1841 censuses.

He married Elizabeth Philip on 8th June 1842 and they had two children: William and Ann.

In 1861 the family were living in Skipton in the 'Club Houses'. James was a farm labourer. 

Elizabeth died in 1862 and James remarried to Ellen Ann Clapham in Bradford in 1868 aged 59, Ellen was 43. Ellen was named Ann on the censuses so I will call her Ann on here. They went on to have two children: Thomas, Margaret.  Ann also had a daughter Nelly Clapham who was named on later censuses as Ellen. 

In the 1871 census Thomas and his family were living in Newmarket Street Skipton, he was a farmer of 14 acres. His mother Ann was living with them aged 76.

In 1881 they were living at 'The Baths' in Skipton, which still exists up Shortbank Road. James was a farmer. Their ages were James 70, Ann was 50. They had a visitor staying with them, Margaret Clapham aged 34.

In 1891 they were still living at The Baths, James was still a farmer aged 80.

James died in 1893 in Skipton.

Children of James Whittingham and Elizabeth Philip:

William Whittingham

William Whittingham was born at Snaygill, Skipton in 1842. In the 1851 census William was staying with his parents at his widowed grandfather's Benjamin Philip at Cother, Skipton. His grandfather was a farmer of 30 acres. He was a farm labourer in 1861. He was a boarder in 1871, living in Quakers Yard, Skipton and was a gardener. Marriage to Susannah chew in 1872. William and Susannah had six children: Jane Elizabeth, Emma, Ann, Sarah Ellen, James Chew, Julia. In 1881 the family were living in Quakers Alley, off Newmarket St, Skipton. William was a general labourer. By 1891 William was widowed, he and his children were now living in Victoria Street, Skipton, he was a gardener at the Grammar School. In 1901 he was  in Hardcastles Yard and had only one son living at home, James who was also a gardener.

William died in 1902 due to an accident. The Coroner  stated he was accidentally kicked by a cow which caused such injuries that he died. Wife Susannah died in 1887.
Daughter Julia remained a spinster and lived with her sister Jane Elizabeth and family, Julia died in 1913. Jane Elizabeth married Henry Thomas Pitcher in 1900. Death in Bradord in 1934. Ann 1876-1882. Sarah Ellen 1877-1899. James Chew, no marriage found. 1879-1948.

 

Ann Whittingham

Ann was born 1844 in Snaygill, Skipton. Marriage to James Bishop in 1868 in Skipton. In 1871 the couple were living at 1 Quakers Yard Skipton, brother William was boarding with them. Ann died in 1875.

Thomas Henry Whittingham

Thomas was born 3rd March 1868. Marriage to Mary Jane Plews in 1893. In 1901 they lived at Water Street, Skipton and Thomas was a cattleman on a farm. In 1911 Thomas was a farmer with his own account and the family now lived at East Baw Head, Earby. They had two children: Thomas Henry and Sylvia Louise, Mary also had a son David Plews.Mary Jane died in 1918 and Thomas re-married to Alice M Turnbull in 1921. In 1939 Thomas and Alice were living in Aspen Lane Earby, Thomas is described as a cowman.
Thomas died in 1954.

 

Daughter of Ellen Ann Clapham.

Ellen Clapham (Nelly). 

Nelly was born in 1868 in Bradford. She was living as step daughter to James and Ellen Ann her mother at The Baths, Skipton in 1871 and 1881 she was a scholar. Something must have happened to her at some point after the last census as on the 1891 and 1901 censuses she wasn't working and was recorded as an 'Idiot' since childhood. In 1911 Nelly was in the Skipton Union Workhouse, Gargrave Road and was recorded as an 'Imbecile'. How very sad for her to end her days like that.
Nelly died in 1931.


Thomas Whittingham

 Father of Ann Whittingham, was born 14th October 1753. He married Margaret Cock in Skipton 18th October 1785 and they had at least eight children: Ann, John, James, Elizabeth, Thomas, Margaret, William, George.

In 1841 the family were living in Draughton and Thomas was a farmer aged 88.

 Margaret died in in 1843. Thomas died in 1845.

John Whittingham.

John was born in Draughton 21 January 1790. Spouse Barbara Butterworth, Marriage St John The Baptist, Halifax 4th October 1812. Children: Valentine William. John, James, Samuel.
Death 1847.

James Whittingham.

James was born in Draughton in 1792. Marriage to Sarah Brownhill 9th November 1820 in Skipton. Children: Thomas, Elizabeth, James, Sarah A, John.The family moved and lived in Idle, Bradford.
Death 1873.

Elizabeth Whittingham.

Elizabeth was born in 1794 in Draughton.  No spouse or death found.

Thomas Whittingham.

Thomas was born 19th June 1796 in Draughton. Spouse Ann Gill. No children found.

Death 10th July 1863.

Margaret Whittingham.

Margaret was born 12th May 1798 in Draughton. No spouse or death found.

William Whittingham.

William was born 7th April 1800. No spouse or death found.

George Whittingham.

George was born 3rd March 1903 in Draughton. Spouse Martha. One daughter Margaret. The family moved to live in Bradford where George died in 1887.

Henry Pickup

Father of James Whittingham was born in Draughton on 12th December 1772, he was Christened at Bolton Abbey on 12th January 1783, son of Henry Pickup and Deborah Longworth.

In 1841 Henry was living in Bolton Abbey at Bolton Hall and was a book keeper.

In 1851 he was living at Stank House Bolton Abbey and was a famer, he was also blind. He had a housekeeper and a male servant, he also had a neice staying with him named Deborah Phillip.

In 1861 Henry was still living at Stank House and was still a farmer, but it doesn't say whether he was still blind. He still had the same housekeeper and male servant.

Henry died in 1868 at Stank House.

 

Henry Pickup 

Father of Henry Pickup, was born in Blackburn Lancashire in 1744. He married Deborah Longworth in Blackburn on 3rd September 1767. They had at least four children: Jane, George, Henry, Mary.

Henry died in Draughton  and was buried at Bolton Abbey on 22nd April 1820. 

Clapham Family

The parents of Ellen Ann Clapham: 

Thomas Clapham was born about 1795 in Yorkshire, it isn't know where but there is a possibility it could have Kildwick, there is a baptism for a Thomas Clapham in 1798 son of Henry and Elizabeth, but this is only speculation as I have no solid evidence.

Thomas married Eleanor Summersgill 24th March 1818 in Blackburn, Lancashire. Eleanor was born 22nd June 1795 at Barden Tower and baptised at Bolton Abbey. 
They had ten children: Mary Jane, John, Grace, Samuel, Ellen Ann, Margaret, Thomas, Robert, Elizabeth Sarah, William.

In 1841 the family lived at Greenberfield Locks Barnoldswick, where Thomas was the lock-keeper before moving on to Gargrave lock.

Thomas died in 1849.

In the 1851 census Eleanor lived in Gargrave with her family, son John was the head of the household and had taken over as lock-keeper on the canal. 

Eleanor died in 1859.

I couldn't get any further with Thomas but did with Eleanor.

Her parents were:

Christopher Summersgill and Jane Ward.

Christopher was born in burnsall in 1765, Jane in 1763 in Barden. Marriage at the Priory Church, Bolton Abbey.

In 1841 the couple lived in Burnsall and Christopher was aged 80 and described as poor.

They had eight children: Mary, Ann, Jane, Eleanor, Henry, Sarah, Jane, Christopher.

Christopher died in Burnsall in 1847, buried at Linton.

Jane died in Burnsall in 1842.

Parents of Christopher Summersgill:

Robert Summersgill and Jane Read.Christopher was born in Burnsall in 1732, Jane was born in Barden in 1736.Marriage 11th July 1757 at St Wilfreds Church, Burnsall.

Childlren:John, Ellen, John, Christopher, Robert, Thomas.

Robert died in 1812 and Jane in 1801.

Father of Robert was John Summersgill. No further records found.
